The Dark Knight Rises is the sole solo Batman movie exception, being a successful Dark Knight flick that earned 58% (including $53 million in China) of its $1.084 billion gross outside of North America. Batman v Superman earned 62% of its $873 million cume overseas, while Justice League earned 65% of its $658 million cume, but are those were ensemble pictures. Batman & Robin earned 55% of its $238 million global gross overseas, but it was still a flop on a $125 million budget. Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight all earned at least 50% of their global grosses in North America. Moreover, and this is key, the Batman franchise has always been a domestically-centric one. But legs are long, with domestic arguably over performing not unlike Wonder Woman in 2017, and there’s little reason to think that audiences didn’t like what they got and won’t come back for more. If reviews had been poor and/or legs had been short, then we might be concerned that The Batman may end up below No Time to Die ($774 million, including $160 million domestic and $60 million in China). Sure, The Batman cost $185 million (as opposed to Venom’s $90 million and Deadpool 2’s $110 million), but $742 million is four times that production budget figure. As for worldwide, it’ll probably end up with about as much as we’d accepted as successful for a number of very big comic book superhero movies (including, yes the two Deadpool films, the first Wonder Woman and the first Venom). It’ll pass Thor 3 and Spider-Man 1 version 3.0 (along with Guardians 1 and Deadpool 2) domestically by the end of next weekend, with Deadpool ($363 million) and Guardians 2 still in reach.
The Batman will make likely more domestically but (presumably) less worldwide than those films. How about Thor: Ragnarok, which grossed $315 million domestic (from a $123 million debut) and $854 million worldwide.
It earned “just” $881 million on a $170 million budget. How about Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming? That Spidey flick was a quasi-sequel to Captain America: Civil War (which introduced Tom Holland’s Peter Parker), had all of the MCU fandom/baggage attached and co-starred (in a heavily-advertised extended cameo) Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. Is James Gunn’s second MCU movie, a breakout sequel that opened 55% bigger ($146 million) than its predecessor and earned 17% more ($390 million) domestic and 12% more ($869 million) than its predecessor a retroactive flop now?

A $740 million sans-China gross plus $120 million from China would push it to $860 million, or about on par with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. The next Hollywood titles headed to China include Roland Emmerich’s action film Moonfall (March 25), Sony’s animation sequel Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (April 3) and Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (April 8).But even idealistically speaking, it’s possible that a pre-Covid China could have added another over/under $100 million to The Batman’s global gross, meaning a global cume closer to $900 million than $800 million. Comedy caper Too Cool to Kill took another $1 million for a $412.9 million gross. Bona Film Group’s The Battle of Lake Changjin 2 climbed to $638.4 million, adding $1.6 million in the latest frame. The film already has earned twice that in the U.K.įurther down the charts, China’s Lunar New Year holdovers continued adding to their comparatively colossal earnings. Maoyan forecasts the film to top out at about $15 million. The Tom Holland-starring action film added just $4 million during the weekend for a $10.4 million total after six days on Chinese screens, according to Artisan Gateway data. Sony’s Uncharted has similarly sputtered in China. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice then earned $95.8 million in 2016, which was bettered by Justice League in 2017 with $106 million. Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, for example, earned $52.8 million way back in 2012, when China had about a third as many movie screens as it has today. Most cinemas in the major cities of Shanghai and Shenzhen were closed, as were theaters in a smattering of other areas nationwide.īut even before the cinema shutdowns, The Batman had only been tracking for a $25 million-plus opening, which would fall on the far low end of what well-reviewed Hollywood superhero films were earning in China until just a few years ago.
